X-rays are an essential diagnostic tool that allows us to examine the entire tooth, including its roots and the surrounding bone. Since the roots and jawbone are covered by gum tissue, we can only see a portion of the tooth with a visual examination alone.
A full mouth series of x-rays is typically taken every 3-5 years for adult patients, providing a comprehensive view of each tooth. Additional x-rays may also be taken during routine cleanings or in emergency situations. Even if you are not experiencing pain or symptoms, x-rays can detect issues such as infections, decay, impacted teeth, or tumors in the jaw. By taking x-rays regularly, we can identify problems early—before they cause discomfort—so they can be treated when they are small and more easily managed.
It's important to note that insurance companies often require x-rays to support clinical findings. Without them, claims may be denied, which could impact your co-pay. For this reason, our office policy requires x-rays to accurately diagnose dental conditions.
We use digital radiography, which exposes you to significantly less radiation than traditional x-rays. We only take the necessary x-rays to ensure a thorough diagnosis, and with digital technology, we can enlarge problem areas and adjust the brightness and contrast for better clarity. Additionally, digital x-rays are environmentally friendly, eliminating the need for film and chemical processing.
